Tax hikes on vacant housing and new rent limits in Spain

A new bill was considered in Spain with the goal to reduce the growth of rental rates in the country's real estate market, which over the past 5 years amounted to more than 40%. In this regard, people with low income faced the risk of losing any opportunity to rent apartments and houses.

The new bill provides for:

  • limiting the growth of rent (for those who own more than 10 properties);
  • a tax increase for those property owners who leave some of their properties empty.

This project aims to make the rental housing market more affordable. In addition, it is expected to contribute to an increase in the number of social housing.
